(Spirit Lake)– Officials with the Iowa Department of Transportation and city of Spirit Lake unveiled plans Thursday evening to revamp Highway nine from the Highway 86 junction…or Vick’s Corner…east to the east Spirit Lake city limits.
Clyde Bartel, a Design Engineer with the Iowa Department of Transportation in Sioux City, says the cost of the project is estimated at nearly four and-a-half million dollars. The city will pick up a portion of the tab, with the D.O.T responsible for the remainder.
The project will consist of an asphalt overlay on all four lanes; curb and gutter; sidewalk work; traffic signal relocations; additional shoulders; widening the highway from four to five lanes between Zenith and Peoria Avenues; and the installation of decorative street lights from the Indian Hills Golf Course to Pioneer Beach Road.
No new stop lights are included in the project, with the intersection of Highways nine and 71, or the “Wal-Mart” corner, remaining a four-way stop.
Bartel says a bidletting on the project will be held January 19th, 2005. Weather permitting, Bartel says work could get underway in April or May. Bartel says they hope to be able to get the entire project completed next summer, but admitted that could be tough to do, depending on weather.
