(Calumet)– A Calumet man has been charged with attempted murder following an investigation Sunday into a domestic violence case. The O’Brien County Sheriff’s Office says deputies were called to 206 South Morse Avenue in Calumet. The victim told authorities she had been struck in the side of her head by the butt of a shotgun. The victim reported she was able to break free and ran out of the house and that the gun was then fired at her.
The suspect was identified as 41-year-old Paul Matthew Long. Deputies say Long was still inside his residence, and that he had allegedly made statements about “wanting to shoot it out with police”. Officers from various law enforcement agencies were called to the scene to form a perimeter around the residence. The HEAT tactical team also responded. Long exited the residence after a brief stand-off and was taken into custody. Long was then taken to MercyOne Hospital in Primghar for treatment of a minor injury sustained during the incident. Long was booked into jail after being released from the hospital. He was charged with attempted murder and domestic abuse assault with intent to inflict serious injury. Bond was set at $30,000 cash only. A no contact order was issued between Long and the victim.
