DNR Investigates O’Brien County Fish Kill

November 22, 2014

(Paullina)– Officials with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources are investigating a fish kill in O’Brien county.

Officials say hundreds of dead suckers, chubs, minnows and sunfish were found this (Tuesday) morning along a three-mile-long stretch of Mud Creek about three miles west of Paullina.

Officials say heavy rain Saturday night resulted in run-off from silage getting into the waterway. They say oxygen in the creek was used up when the silage was consumed by bacteria. Silage is high in organic matter.

Officials say they’re continuing to investigate and conduct fish counts, and that enforcement action may be taken against a dairy operation.
