DNR Extends Deadline To Remove Ice Fishing Shelters

November 22, 2014

(Orleans)– The Iowa Department of Natural Resources announced Tuesday it’s extending the deadline for removing permanent ice fishing shelters from lakes to March 1st. The usual deadline is February 20th.

DNR officials say the deadline is being extended due to the unusually thick ice conditions and the colder than normal weather.

None-the-less, they’re urging owners of shelters to keep a close eye on them. They say ice conditions could rapidly worsen should warm weather develop.

DNR officials are also warning those venturing out on the ice to stay clear of areas of heavy drifts or large piles of snow. They say the weight of the snow may have weakened the ice in those areas.
