Dickinson Supervisors Schedule Hearing On West Sioux Estates Project

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson county board of supervisors today (Tues.) approved plans and specifications and set September 11th at 11:00 a.m. as the date and time for a public hearing on a paving project in West Sioux Estates…a residential subdivision on the Little Sioux River.

The action didn’t come without some discussion, though.

Saying she’s concerned a tax increment finance district that’s in place in that area may not generate enough revenue to pay for the project, Supervisor Mardi Allen suggested a less expensive option such as sealcoating be looked at in addition to the concrete and blacktop options.

Under the proposal, the improved road is to eventually be accepted into the county’s secondary road system. To do that, roads must meet certain criteria spelled out by the county. County Engineer Dan Eckert told Allen seal coating doesn’t meet that criteria, adding that sealcoating would actually cost more in the end as it requires more maintenance. None-the-less, Allen said she wants to review the criteria and suggested a meeting be held in the near future to talk about it.

The West Sioux Estates project has an estimated cost 323-thousand dollars for concrete and 288-thousand for asphalt paving.

Supervisors Paul Johnson and Wayne Northey were out of town and not on hand for today’s (Tues.) meeting.
