(Spirit Lake)– A community action organization that serves a 12-county area of northwest Iowa continues to see an increased demand for services.
Larry Rohret, Executive Director of Upper Des Moines Opportunity, was at Tuesday’s Dickinson County Board of Supervisors meeting making his annual pitch for funding. Rohret told the supervisors UDMO assisted 1,980 Dickinson county residents in 818 households in the past year. He says that’s pretty consistent with levels in other counties they serve.
Rohret says fuel assistance remains their number one request for assistance followed by head start, food assistance for low income women and children through the WIC program; the food pantry; medication assistance; and head start.
Rohret says they’ve seen a noticeable increase in fuel assistance applications in recent days with the onset of the cold weather.
Upper Des Moines Opportunity is requesting 16,463-dollars from Dickinson county in the upcoming fiscal year…the same as in previous years.
The supervisors will take the request into consideration when they start work on the upcoming fiscal year budget in coming weeks.
