Dickinson County Supervisors Award Bid On Trails Project

February 15, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– Dickinson county supervisors today (Tues.) awarded the low bid of a little more than $838,000 to extend a recreational trail north from the north harbor area of West Lake Okoboji to connect with the rail trail north of the intersection of Highways 9 and 86. The trail will be on the east side of Highway 86. Erin Reed addressed some concern over safety in crossing the intersection…

“One concern is that right-hand turn lane. People going north on ’86 that turn right into to go to Spirit Lake. That’s uncontrolled, essentially, but we are putting up a rapid flashing beacon for the trail users to push so at least motorists are alerted that somebody’s planning to cross the trail, or the road there. Now those do not require the traffic to stop, the vehicles to stop. It’s more of a warning system. We will include a sign. We have the same thing up there on Highway 86 to warn, a hawk system where it actually stops traffic. So what we will do is include a sign that basically says vehicles are not required to stop.”

Plans call for the project to be constructed over the upcoming season.
