Dickinson County Authorities Investigate Mailbox Explosion

November 22, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– An investigation continues into a mailbox that was blown up over the weekend in the East Okoboji Beach area.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office says deputies and the Spirit Lake Fire Department were called shortly after 7:30 p.m. Saturday to 25925 Walleye Drive where a mailbox had been damaged by an explosive device.

No injuries were reported.

It’s believed the incident happened already Friday night, between 9:30 and 10:00 p.m. Residents in the neighborhood reported hearing a very loud noise. Two males in the their late teens or early 20’s were seen running from the area. A mid 1980’s Jeep Grand Cherokee was also seen leaving the area about that time, traveling south.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Ofifce believes it was a random incident. Citizens are being told to be on the lookout for anything suspicious when they get their mail, and to report anything out of the ordinary to their local law enforcement agency.

The Dickinson County Sheriff’s Office is being assisted in its ongoing investigation by the State Fire Marshall’s Office and the U-S Postal Inspection Service.

The Dickinson County Crimestoppers program is offering a reward for any information that leads to an arrest in the case.
