Dickinson Co. Supervisors Approve Proposal To Update Aerial Maps

March 10, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Board of Supervisors Tuesday voted to go ahead with a project to update the county’s aerial maps. I-T Director Alyssa Julius told the board it’s been several years since those maps were last updated…

“The history of our aerials, we had them in 2002, 2009, 2013, 2017, so we’re due. Also the history of the aerials is they used to come out of a different fund that the assessor had and that fund is no longer there so we’re kind of transitioning to a different way to pay for them.”

The cost is a little more than $91,000. Julius says one possible source of that money could be American Rescue Plan Act funds. Some other possible sources have also been identified in the event they can’t use the ARPA funding. Julius adds the new updates include some new features that would be included on the maps…

“This 91,000 includes a change finder, so that means we can overlay them and see if anything in the community has changed. And then I don’t know if you remember, it was, I believe, 2019 when we got the building outlines and that was kind of a joint project with the sanitary sewer. That’s included in this quote as well.”

Supervisor Tim Fairchild spoke in favor of updating the aerial maps…

“I think what this illustrates is how far behind we are. This is pretty significant. And it’s not just this community. It’s everywhere around Dickinson county has had those changes.”

Fairchild made the comment after supervisors viewed a map of one part of the county that has seen significant changes since the last aerial photo of that same area was taken.

Julius suggested the county look at updating those maps every four to five years.
