(Undated)– There were two exciting school board races in Dickinson county yesterday.
In Spirit Lake, persistence paid off for Cliff Garvey. After several unsuccessful bids in the past for school board, the retired teacher from Sioux City won by two votes. Garvey defeated incumbent Carol Schultz 100 to 98.
In Okoboji, two aggressive write-in candidates defeated a candidate whose name was actually on the ballot. After a last minute blitz of radio advertising, Mark Fisher received 326 votes and Tom Clary got 268 to win the two open seats on the Okoboji board. Candidate William Shafer, who’s name was actually on the ballot, got 258 votes. Kate Lambertson, who was also running as a write-in, received 192.
Candidate William Gerdeman was elected to the Terril board with 38 votes. The second seat in Terril was filled by a write-in. Galen Chicoine (She-quin) won that seat with 24 votes.
And incumbents Gary Johnson and Stan Anderson were returned to their seats on the Harris-Lake Park school board without competition. Johnson received 73 votes in director district three; Anderson got 69 votes in district five.
In Spencer, there was a six-way race for two open school board seats. The winners were Scott DeGeest and Susan Harmen. Voters also renewed the district’s 67 cent Physical Plant and Equipment Levy on a margin of 972 yes to 312 no.
