Dickinson Co. Residents Hire Lawyer To Try To Stop Hog Lot

November 23, 2014

(Milford)– Dickinson county residents opposed to a four thousand head hog confinement being built near Horseshoe Bend County Park are hiring a lawyer to try to stop it.

About 80 people met a second time Thursday evening and decided to take the step. Most of the 10-thousand dollars needed for retaining the attorney has been raised. But the group says more money is needed. They want to establish a “war chest”. A non-profit organization is being formed to collect donations.

One of those spearheading the effort, Sherry Eichman of rural Milford, hopes residents throughout Dickinson county will contribute…saying if one feedlot is allowed, more will follow in other parts of the county…perhaps near one of the Iowa great lakes.

Meanwhile, June Goldman, chairperson of the Dickinson County Board of Supervisors, says she’s calling the D-N-R’s attention to a discrepancy in a permit that was approved for the operation. Goldman says a draft permit application mentions one site, while the final application mentions a completely different one.

The supervisors have come under fire for not saying anything when they were notified by the D-N-R that a permit was being applied for.
