Developer Withdraws Rezoning Request For South Side Of Silver Lake At Lake Park

March 15, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Lake Park)– A developer has announced he’s withdrawing a rezoning request for the south side of Silver Lake at Lake Park. Seth Hellenga made the announcement at this (Monday) evening’s Lake Park City Council meeting…

“I’m withdrawing the re-zoning application. I don’t have much else to say other than that.”

Hellenga was asked what his plans are now for the land…

“No, I don’t really have any comments on what I’d do at this point.”

Hellenga declined to comment on what it was that led up to his decision to withdraw the rezoning request. The matter was on the agenda Monday evening for possible action by the city council.

The proposed rezoning drew opposition from residents living in the area of the proposed development at a public hearing last month. They expressed concern over population density, traffic, and possible environmental impacts on Silver Lake. Proponents argued it would boost Lake Park’s economy. Hellenga was proposing a development that would have included 63 cabins.

Meanwhile, a member of the Silver Lake Improvement Association, Herb Stewart, presented the Lake Park City Council with some lakeshore development ordinances from several cities in the lakes corridor, requesting the city of Lake Park consider adopting something similar…

“Our SLIPA Board would like you guys to review them and decide what you like or don’t like in them and then possibly get with the SLIPA group and work with us on trying to get something established to be able to have some ordinances on where Lake Park is going in the future for expansion.”

Mayor Matt Carstensen told Stewart the council will review the material and look into the matter.
