Crash Closes Portion Of Hwy 71 For Several Hours

(Windom, Mn.)– A head-on crash involving a car and a semi Tuesday on Highway 71 two miles south of Windom seriously injured two people and shut down the roadway in that area for several hours.

The Minnesota State Patrol says 67-year-old Carol Kirstein of Wilder was driving a 2004 Buick northbound when she crossed the center line and collided with an oncoming Freightliner semi tractor/trailer. The driver of the semi, 28-year-old Matthew Huber of Holmen, Wisconsin, tried to avoid the collision and lost control of the semi, which flipped onto its side.

Kirstein and a passenger in her vehicle, 70-year-old Robert Kirstein of Wilder, were taken by ambulance to the Windom hospital. They were transferred to Sanford Hospital in Sioux Falls. Carol Kirstein sustained a broken leg an other injuries; Robert Kirstein sustained an internal injury. Both were listed in critical condition.

Huber was treated at the Windom hospital for a minor injury and released.

A 2004 Buick LeSabre driven by Kirstein was totaled; moderate damage was reported to the 1998 Freightliner semi driven by Huber.

The mishap took place shortly after 2:30 p.m.

The Minnesota State Patrol was assisted by the Jackson and Cottonwood County Sheriff’s Offices.
