(Spirit Lake)– Opposition appears to be growing over a proposal to establish a countywide building code in Dickinson county.
The issue came up again at Tuesday’s Dickinson county board of supervisors meeting when it came time to appoint a representative to a group guaging interest in such a proposal.
Mike Hoeppner is staunchly opposed to the measure. He says it would only make the lakes area that much more of an expensive place to live. Hoeppner and others feel it would result in much higher fees for building permits. Proponents say the cost issue is being blown out of proportion. They say it’s needed for safety reasons.
A motion was made by Supervisor Wayne Northey to appoint Planning and Zoning Administrator David Kolhaase to the committee as the county’s representative. David Gottsche seconded the motion…but withdrew it after some discussion. June Goldman then made the second. The motion to make the appointment passed two-to-one with Gottsche casting the lone no vote.
Our latest Explore Okoboji-dot-com online poll indicates opposition to a countywide building code is growing. 71 percent of those who responded oppose the measure; 29 percent said they’re in favor.
