Committee Meets To Address Hwy 71 Concerns Through Lakes Corridor

December 21, 2021 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– Some progress has apparently been made in addressing concerns into the upcoming renovation of Highway 71 through Arnolds Park and Okoboji and how the work would be staged. The concerns were brought to light last week at a special Okoboji City Council meeting with representatives of the Department of Transportation. A committee was formed following that session to try to address the matter. Dickinson County Supervisor Kim Wermersen is a member of that group. He told fellow supervisors Tuesday that it appears there’s been some resolution to the matter…

“Of course the challenge is Okoboji and Arnolds Park run together. The challenge is the bridge, the causeway. There’s only one way north and south there, and so there was a lot of discussion about how to handle that. I believe there was a resolution that will be coming forward. We’re going to re-draw things up. We’re going to be meeting again, I think January 5th. The real goal is to get this done as quickly as possible in the non seasons of fall and spring before and after Memorial Day-Labor Day, and so it’s one of those things hopefully we’ll get done. I know they’re trying, we’re all trying our best to get through this.”

Wermersen didn’t provide details as far as what’s being proposed to address the concerns.
