Cleanwater Alliance Wants Dick. Co. Cities To Start Composting Programs

November 23, 2014

(Arnolds Park)– The Iowa Great Lakes Cleanwater Alliance wants cities and the county to adopt some type of composting program. The issue was discussed at a meeting of the organization on Wednesday.

Orville Berg of the Dickinson County Soil and Water Conservation District, a major player in the alliance, told members burning is causing problems for the Iowa Great Lakes. He says ashes containing large amounts of acid and phosphorous are getting into the lakes every year.

But getting a compost program started could be a costly proposition. Terry Smith of Waste Management, owner/operator of the Dickinson County Landfill east of Arnolds Park, told alliance members the estimated cost to put in a one acre composting facility is about 57-thousand dollars. Smith said local entities would need to cost share the project.
