(Spirit Lake)– The Dickinson County Cleanwater Alliance is asking for the public’s assistance in reporting erosion problems now that the spring rains have arrived.
Steve Anderson, Coordinator of the Alliance, says both agricultural and urban areas must meet certain standards under the federal Cleanwater Act, which sets limits for certain pollutants, including soil that washes into water.
Anderson says anyone who sees obvious signs of severe erosion should report them by contacting the respective city if the problem is within a city limits. If it’s in the county, contact the county’s Planning and Zoning Office or the respective county’s Soil and Water Conservation District Office, or the DNR.
Anderson says they also want to know about silt fences in poor condition, not properly installed, or not installed at all.
Anderson says other than small problems at some construction sites, no serious erosion problems have been reported so far this spring in the Iowa Great Lakes.
