Clean-up Underway From Sunday Storms

November 23, 2014

(Spirit Lake)– Clean-up is underway in portions of the region following a series of severe thunderstorms Sunday evening.

In the Iowa Great Lakes, most of the damage consisted of tree damage on the south side of Big Spirit Lake, where there were also reports of atleast one dock being twisted around. A boat hoist was also heavily damaged.

The National Weather Serivce says it received a report of a tree that fell on a roof in Spirit Lake. There was no immediate confirmation of that, however, and it isn’t known who made the report.

The National Weather Service also says it received a report of an 80 mile-per-hour wind gust from a weather spotter in Spirit Lake. However the highest gust here at the studio was only 50 miles-per-hour. A 44 mile-per-hour gust was reported at Vick’s Corner.

There were also scattered reports of large hail. Three-quarter inch hail was reported by spotters in the Harris, Lake Park, Fostoria, Everly and Dickens areas.

The Minnesota State Patrol says a pickup pulling a camper was blown off the road shortly before 5:00 p.m. Sunday. The driver and a passenger, both from Bemidji, Minnesota, were taken to the Windom Hospital where they were treated and released. The incident took place on Highway 71 just north of Windom.

Authorities say a severe storm was occuring at the time.
