City Of Spirit Lake Revising An Ordinance Pertaining To Dangerous Dogs

(Spirit Lake)– The city of Spirit Lake is revising an ordinance pertaining to dangerous dogs. City Attorney/Administrator Gregg Owens tells KUOO news the change pertains to the conditions that would trigger the ordinance…
“There are many things that would trigger a dangerous dog declaration, but one of the things that was causing a problem was if a dog, for example, attacks another dog or another pet, the dangerous dog provisions weren’t triggered unless it had done that before. Whereas if it attacks a person, it just takes one attack for those provisions to be triggered. And so in essence, the ordinance allowed one free bite for dogs that are so inclined and it was determined it was probably better to get rid of that because we’ve had situations where dogs had had attacks prior and had something been able to have been done at that time perhaps the second situation wouldn’t have occurred.”
The City Council Tuesday held the third reading of the revised ordinance and adopted it on a four to one vote. It goes into affect upon publication.
