City Of Spencer Looking At Upgrading Downtown Traffic Light Controllers

February 08, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spencer)– The city of Spencer is hoping to get a D.O.T grant that would allow the city to upgrade its traffic signal control system in the downtown area.

Public Works Director Mark White told the council Monday evening the existing controller is obsolete. He says the new system would offer some new features, especially for pedestrians…

“It’s kind of a hybrid system half way between an adaptive system and a timed system. One of the things that would really be beneficial to the downtown pedestrians and our robust downtown district right now is the ability to have push buttons for pedestrian crossings.”

The city is hoping to get a little more than $77,000 for the equipment.

White says the city will still have to look at doing something even if they don’t get the grant. He says replacement parts for the current system are no longer available. The council voted unanimously Monday evening to authorize the grant application.
