Cause Of BV Co. Fish Kill Traced To Truck Wash; Other Fish Kills In Osceola, Emmet Counties

November 22, 2014

(Undated)– The source of a contaminant that killed some fish along a tributary of the Raccoon River near Rembrandt has been traced to some wastewater from a truck wash.

The Iowa Department of Natural Resources says Binder Livestock Trailer Wash of Sioux Rapids had legally applied the wastewater to some fields near Rembrandt, but it got into some tile lines that drain into the stream, turning it red. 732 suckers were killed. The discoloration was reported Sunday.

DNR officials say they’re considering additional enforcement action and restitution for the fish killed.

Meanwhile, the DNR says two other fish kills reported earlier this week in northwest Iowa were caused by low water levels and high water temperatures.

Those took place on the Ocheyedan River near the Osceola County Conservation Board headquarters and in what’s described as the “goose pen area” just off Ingham Lake in Emmet county.
