Car vs. Semi

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– A collision Friday morning involving a car and a semi tractor/trailer at the North “Y” in Spencer sent one person to the hospital with minor injuries.

Spencer police say 49-year-old James Powell of Sandia, Texas was driving a Peterbilt semi tractor/trailer loaded with a wind turbine blade. Officers say Powell was attempting to turn left onto Highway 71 from Highway 18 when he collided with a southbound vehicle driven by 72-year-old Virginia Bergner of Spencer. The impact of the collision sent Bergner’s vehicle into the west ditch.

Bergner was transported by ambulance to Spencer Hospital where she was treated for some bruises and released. No injuries were reported to Powell, who was cited for failure to yield.

In addition, D.O.T officials say there was a restriction in place on the oversized load of the semi, restricting it to daylight travel only. Officials say the crash took place shortly before 7:00 a.m…when it was still dark.

A 1993 Eagle Bergner was driving was totaled; minor damage was reported to the semi.
