(Spencer)– A Spencer woman was injured when a vehicle she was driving Sunday collided with the post office in Spencer.
Spencer police say 81-year-old Shirley Thoreson of Spencer was attempting to park in a handicap space when the vehicle she was driving went over the curb and collided with the northwest corner of the post office. The vehicle continued east across a sidewalk and collided with a large rock in a planting bed and a support pillar before coming to rest.
Thoreson was taken by ambulance to Spencer Hospital where she was treated for a minor injury and released.
Thoreson told authorities she thought her brakes failed. But after investigating, police say it appears she hit the accelerator instead of the brake pedal. She was cited for failure to maintain control.
10-thousand dollars in damage was estimated to a 1999 Buick Thoreson was driving; damage to the building was also estimated at 10-thousand dollars.
The mishap took place around 3:30 p.m.
