Boat Registrations In Iowa Need To Be Renewed By April 30th

April 08, 2022 Steve Schwaller

(Spirit Lake)– A reminder that boat registrations in Iowa expire April 30th. Dickinson County Recorder Ann Ditsworth is encouraging boat owners not to wait until the last minute…

“If you can get in sooner rather than later, it will be great. We have about 4,000 more boats to register at this point so we feel like we’re about a third of the way done, which is a little overwhelming to think about the number yet to come, but we look forward to serving everyone as swiftly as we can. It just helps if we can keep people continuously coming rather than coming all at the end.”

Ditsworth says they typically register about 6,000 boats in Dickinson county…

“Those aren’t all people who live year around. We also have a lot of the lake homes, residents, that register their boats here because this is where they use them.”

Boat owners may bring their current registration to any Recorder’s Office when they renew. Nonresidents who register their boat in Iowa need to go the county where the boat is primarily used. Registrations are good for three years.

Revenue from registration fees supports water trails, enforcement, aquatic invasive species and boater education and safety programs.
