Boat Capsizes On West Lake Okoboji

November 22, 2014

(Arnolds Park)– No injuries were reported Sunday evening when a small fishing boat capsized on West Lake Okoboji.

Chris Yungbluth of Arnolds Park-Okoboji Fire and Rescue tells KUOO news two adults and a child were in a 14 or 16 foot boat that capsized off Pillsbury Point. Yungbluth says the boat overturned, throwing the occupants into the water. He says the child was wearing a life preserver and the two adults were able to swim. Yungbluth says the Arnolds Park-Okoboji Fire and Rescue boat arrived on the scene a short time later and plucked all three safely from the water. No injuries were reported.

Gary Owen, and enforcement officer with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says large wakes from some larger boats nearby is what caused the smaller boat to capsize.
