Autopsy Finds Woman Found In Apartment Fire Died Of Smoke Inhalation

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– Autopsy results show a woman who died in an apartment fire Monday night in Spencer died of smoke inhalation.

The results indicate 47-year-old Karen Colding had high levels of carbon monoxide in her system.

The cause of the blaze was determined to be improperly disposed smoking materials that ignited a sofa in a first floor apartment at 503 West Sixth Street in Spencer.

Three families who had been living in the building lost all their belongings in the blaze. The Iowa Great Lakes Area Chapter of the American Red Cross has since helped them relocate. However, they’re still seeking donations of furniture and other household items. Those interested in donating should contact the Red Cross at (712) 262-2574 and leave a message.
