Authorities Issue Annual Warning Of Home Improvement Scams

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– At long last, hopefully spring has finally sprung.

That has area law enforcement agencies reminding residents to be on the lookout for con artists and home improvement scams.

Authorities say reports of such incidents typically increase this time of year with the nicer weather.

They say you need to be on the lookout for travelling groups wanting to paint or roof your home, seal or asphalt your driveway, perform flooring installation, and septic tank maintenance…among other things.

Officials say the quality of work by such firms is usually questionable and substandard; and the final bill is usually much higher than quoted.

Warning signs include solicitations by individuals or firms that have leftover material from a previous job, or a price that’s simply too good to be true.

A demand for money up-front is another warning sign.

Anyone who has been defrauded or feel they may have been targeted by such a practice should contact their local law enforcement agency.
