Attorney General Tom Miller Says Consumer Protection Will Continue To Be A High Priority Of His Office In 2022

December 30, 2021 Steve Schwaller

(Des Moines)– Iowa Attorney General Tom Miller announced today (Thurs.) several consumer protection priorities his office will be taking on in the coming year. Miller, who was also recently elected President of the National Association of Attorneys General, says among the initiatives is one that would provide a better and quicker warning system about fundamental frauds and scams that especially target older people…

“The Social Security fraud, the IRS fraud, the grandparent fraud, the utility shut-off fraud. To get that word out even sooner. And use social media among other means to do that.”

Miller says another part of the initiative consists of ongoing anti-trust suits against some of the social media giants and practices they use to gather personal data, especially when it comes to children…

“Facebook has algorithms that as people start using Facebook less, they have ways to sort of pull them back in, to push them back in. And it’s bad enough when they’re doing that with adults, but to do that with kids seems to be deceptive and certainly unfair.”

Miller adds they’ll also be putting an emphasis on addressing something known as “dark patterns” commonly used by online merchandising giants…

Miller outlined the priorities this (Thurs.) morning during an online press conference.
