Arnolds Park City Council Discusses Concerns Over Lake Street Project

December 09, 2021 Steve Schwaller

(Arnolds Park)– Concerns over the reconstruction of Lake Street through the amusement park area were a major topic of discussion at Wednesday’s Arnolds Park City Council meeting. A major part of the project is being funded by Imagine Iowa Great Lakes. Representatives of the organization, their attorney and contractor were present either in person or via phone at last (Wed.) night’s meeting. Council members expressed concern that they had not until just recently received a formal written agreement from the organization. City officials also expressed concern over some changes in the document they say they hadn’t been made aware of previously. Mayor Jim Hussong…

“We went ahead back in October in good faith saying this was going to happen, we’re going to get this done, and it’s the middle of December and we haven’t got it done. So you can see where we’re getting a little bit nervous.”

Barry Sackett, an attorney for Imagine Iowa Great Lakes, accepted responsibility for the matter, saying he thought the revised document had been previously made available to the council, adding it was not the fault of Imagine Iowa Great Lakes.

One of the revisions council members say they weren’t made aware of until now is one that allows work on the project continue through the winter. The general contractor on the project told the council it’s vital the work continue through the winter if they are to meet the May 15th, 2022 completion deadline. He assured council members the necessary procedures will be followed to ensure a quality product, and vowed to provide the city with regular updates on the project. Council members then gave their nod of approval for the work to continue through the winter. Attorneys in the meantime will fine tune language in the agreement to address some of the city’s concerns.
