Additional Details Released Into Stand-off/Suicide

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– Spencer police have released additional details into Thursday’s incident in which a man wanted on a warrant killed himself after authorities attempted to arrest him.

Authorities say 48-year-old Allen Harman was wanted for sexually assaulting a minor in Wyoming. He held authorities at bay in a room at the AmericInn Motel before fatally shooting himself in the head with what authorities now say was a nine millimeter semi automatic Berreta.

Authorities say a search of the vehicle Harman had been driving turned up a loaded 30-30 lever action rifle loaded with five rounds of hollow point ammunition. It was found hidden between the front seats.

Authorities also located 21 rounds of ammunition for the gun in the vehicle’s glove compartment.

Spencer Police Chief Mark Lawson says a follow-up investigation continues with assistance from the Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation and authorities in Wyoming.
