Abnormally Cold Spring Starting To Cause Concern For Farmers

(Lakefield, Mn.)– The abnormally cold spring we’ve been experiencing recently is causing some concern among farmers. Jim Nesseth of Extended Ag Services in Lakefield says there’s even still some frost in the ground in some areas…
“We had a deep frost and as of a couple days ago the frost depth was about the same, it was about at 38 inches, but at the surface, we actually had some surface thaw there, so down to about 16 inches. So that top part of the soil is, you know, frost-free but as get down deeper there’s frost in the ground. So it’s going to take warmer temperatures, Steve, to kind of get this frost out of the ground and of course, you know, a good inch of warm rain or better would be perfect.”
Even at the surface Nesseth says the soil temperatures are quite cold yet, in the upper 30’s to around 40 degrees. That’s well below recommended levels for planting.
