8 Snowmobiles, 1 Vehicle Fall Through During Winter Games

November 22, 2014

(Arnolds Park)– Even though ice conditions for this year’s University of Okoboji Winter Games were excellent for the most part, that didn’t keep some snowmobiles and atleast one vehicle from falling through.

Gary Owen, an enforcement officer with the Iowa Department of Natural Resources, says most of the snowmobiles fell through while trying to travel under bridges, where open water is present. In several instances, Owen says the operators were attempting to jump the open water, but missed. No injuries were reported in those incidents. However, Owen says one person WAS injured Friday night in a snowmobile accident on East Lake Okoboji near the Ritz. Owen says that person was taken to the hospital with a broken pelvis.

Owen says a pickup fell through the ice Sunday near the bridge between Upper Gar and Minnewashta. No injuries were reported.
