3-Vehicle Crash In Clay Co. Sends 3 To The Hospital

November 22, 2014

(Spencer)– A three-vehicle crash near Spencer Monday sent three people to the hospital.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office says it took place around Noon at the intersection of Highway 18 and 240th Avenue, or County Road M-50.

Authorities say 57-year-old Ralph Garberson of Spencer was driving a 1999 Chevrolet pickup westbound on Highway 18. 27-year-old Kelcey Baumgart of rural Spencer was driving a Jeep Grand Cherokee and had stopped at a stop sign on 240th Avenue, facing north. Authorities say Baumgart pulled into the intersection and Garberson was unable to avoid a collision, striking Baumgart’s Jeep broadside on the passenger side. The impact caused both vehicles to slide to the northwest, striking a Cadillac driven by Keith Kellner of rural Spencer who had stopped for a stop sign facing south on 240th Avenue.

Garberson and his wife Barbara, a passenger in his pickup, and Baumgart, were transported to Spencer Hospital for various undisclosed injuries. Kellner refused treatment at the scene and was given a ride to his residence.

Baumgart was charged with driving while revoked…a serious misdemeanor; and failure to obey a stop sign…also a serious misdemeanor.

10-thousand dollars in damage was estimated to the pickup driven by Garberson and to the Jeep driven by Baumgart with 7,500-dollars in front-end damage estimated to the Cadillac driven by Kellner.

The Clay County Sheriff’s Office was assisted on the scene by the Spencer Police Department, Iowa State Patrol, Dickens Fire and Rescue, Spencer Fire Department and Spencer Hospital Ambulance.
