(Spirit Lake)– More detailed plans have been released for the new trail head under construction at the corner of Lake Street and Peoria Avenue, just east of Hy-Vee in Spirit Lake. Michele Goodenow is with Imagine Iowa Great Lakes, which is making the project possible. She says it will feature a number of amenities…
“It will have two restrooms, a number of benches, it will provide shade for cyclists and pedestrian; it will have a nice, big parking lot; a bicycle repair station and a charging station; a water fountain to fill bottles of water and for your pets. It’s got a steel canopy. The architecture is really beautiful. You’ll notice that the project has been stagnant for quite some time. We were delayed getting the steel and it finally is in fabrication so they’re going to start pouring footings and we hope to have this completed mid to late July.”
Goodenow adds some Spirit Lake High School students have also been involved in the project…
“The J-Term class at Spirit Lake High School, The Art of Welding Class, actually helped and they fabricated the 30-foot tall steel tower, the logo for it, and all of the bicycle racks.”
Goodenow says the new trail head will be located in a very strategic place as it will serve as the intersection of two major trails in the Dickinson County trails system…
“To some people it might seem like a strange location but it’s really not because the Spine Trail runs north and south and it connects right at that location and then the Tatonka Ska Trace Trail runs east and west, and eventually that trail will go all the way to Lake park.”
And if you’re wondering the significance behind the name Tatonka Ska Trace, it’s Lakota Sioux for white buffalo. The Iowa Commission on Native American Affairs was consulted and gave approval of the name.
