National Safe Boating Week Is May 22-28

May 22, 2021

(Arnold’s Park)-National Safe Boating Week is May 22nd through the 28th and the Iowa DNR has some tips for safe boating during the busy season. KUOO’s Mathew Grisham has more…

National Safe Boating Week

National Safe Boating Week starts May 22nd and wants to remind people about boating safety as we get closer to Memorial Day. Thousands of boaters will be on the water in the Lakes Area, which means everyone has a part to play in keeping both their passengers and fellow boaters safe.

Susan Stocker, Boating Law Administrator, says that people should consider taking some of the DNR’s free online boating safety courses…

“And so yeah we have a free online course from a vendor and then we also have two online courses that have a small fee associated with it. So we would love to have everybody go out and take a boating safety course.”

Along with the safety courses, the DNR asks you to SCAN your surroundings for danger…

“SCAN the letters stand for search, concentrate, analyze and negotiate.”

Low water can also contribute to boating accidents, revealing previously concealed rocks and sandbars…

“We have low water this time of year, even though we’re getting some rain you know it’s not necessarily enough, and like you said you’ve got some wing dams and you do have some rocks underneath.”

If you want to check out the free boating safety course, please visit the DNR’s website here and look under things to do for boating safety.
