(Spirit Lake)– Most law enforcement agencies in the region will be participating in a “Click it or Ticket” campaign that starts this coming Monday, May 24th and runs through June 6th.
The program is being conducted in cooperation with the Iowa Governor’s Traffic Safety Bureau. According to that agency, there were five traffic fatalities on the state’s roadways over Memorial Day weekend last year. They add that 2,988 crashes were reported in May of 2020 in Iowa and that of those, 167 people were injured because they weren’t using seat belts.
Officials say that while Iowa’s seat belt compliance rate is just over 95 percent, roughly 48 percent of fatal crashes that occurred in the state in 2020 involved those who were unbelted.
Law enforcement agencies will also be on the lookout for speeders. Many states, including Iowa, have seen a rise in those speeding well in excess of 100 mph.
