Spirit Lake High School Music and Drama Department Students to participate in 2021 Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase

May 11, 2021

(Spirit Lake)-Spirit Lake Music and Drama Students have received several awards for their recent spring musical, KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:

Spirit Lake High School Music and Drama Department will participate in 2021 Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase

The Spirit Lake High School Music and Drama Department will participate in the 2021 Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards Showcase.

Vocal Music and Drama Director Luke Miller explains.  “Our production that we just had, Bye, Bye Birdie, we signed up to be adjudicated by the Iowa High School Musical Theater Awards, and what they do is send 3 judges to watch your show.  In this case, this year 2 of them watched virtually on our live feed, and they give general comments and make notes about the show and kind of rate the show and give you some good advice on things that can go better, and then, from that they also nominate different parts of your show and people in your show for more specific awards.”

He adds that the department received several awards.  “The cast overall received a production award for Outstanding Overall Technical and Creative Achievements, we received special recognition for our ensemble work, or the chorus, and also, the biggest awards I’d say, Max Bower and Anna Fuelberth, both received Outstanding Performance in a Principal Role.  What that does is, it allows them to go down to Des Moines and record a portion of their songs that they performed in the musical.”

The Showcase will be broadcast on Iowa PBS July 9, 2021.
