(Orange City)-The Orange City Tulip Festival is about to get underway, KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:
The Orange City Tulip Festival is scheduled for May 13-15.
Festival Marketing Manager Jenon Scallon says a big celebration is planned. “It is our 80th celebration this year. Our 80th celebration was meant to take place last year, but obviously with the pandemic it got cancelled and so we’re celebrating the 80th this year, and our theme is 80 Years of Tulips and Tradition. It looks like the tulips will be beautiful for the week and, of course, we’ll have favorite festival traditions as well for people to enjoy. We’re really looking forward to twice daily parades, we have a new float to commemorate the 80th anniversary and then we also have a fireworks show on Friday evening.”
She notes that some festivities begin early. “It gets going early on Tuesday with the night show production and then Wednesday, we actually have a cruise in car show that goes on downtown, and a lot of the food vendors will open up and our carnival midway starts that night as well.”
She adds that many Dutch traditions are celebrated. “Our Straat Fest, that’s what we call our street festival, starts at 1 o’clock each day, and that’s where you can see Dutch dancing and authentic Dutch costumes and you can also see street scrubbing. So, we clean the street so that it’s ready for the Queen to come through in the parade which starts at 2:15 every afternoon.”
