Firefighters Respond Twice In Two Days In Row To Large Grass Fires At The Same Location

May 05, 2021

(Lakefield, Mn.)– The Lakefield Fire Department was paged on Monday and Tuesday to fight a grass fire at the Boot Lake Wildlife Management Area.  Lakefield Fire Chief Tim Baumann says it was a battle…Baumann01 (1)

“It was a challenge out there. We called Jackson right away for their grass rig unit because you can’t take any heavy equipment out there. We battled it for about an hour and-a-half, finally got it put out.”

Baumann says they don’t know how the fire started but with the dry conditions people need to be extra cautious…Baumann02 (1)

“Just be extra careful and if you really need to burn something, watch the weather. Make sure the wind isn’t forecast to pick up or change wind directions. It’s probably best to wait if it’s not an absolute must to burn until after we get some moisture.”

Parts of Jackson County Road 14 were temporarily closed due to no visibility caused by heavy smoke.

Crews were on scene for about 2.5 hours on Monday and 2 hours on Tuesday.

The Jackson Fire department was paged for assistance both days.
