(Spencer)-Two Northwest Iowa Sisters have won a big prize with the Iowa Lottery, KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:
Two sisters from Northwest Iowa have won a $300,000 lottery prize.
Sam Martin, Iowa Lottery External Relations says, Jeanne McEntee of Spencer and Janet Muller of Spirit Lake, won the sixth top prize in the Iowa Lottery’s “Colossal Crossword” scratch game. “They won on a $30 ticket called the Colossal Crossword scratch game. We have several different varieties of crossword tickets and the Colossal Crossword, as the name suggests, is our biggest one. I believe Jeanne purchased the tickets from Casey’s, 800 South Grand Avenue in Spencer. They claimed their prize on Monday at Lottery Headquarters and when they came down to claim their prize, they actually told us that they had purchased it in mid-March, but they wanted to take some time before they claimed their prize to kind of get their financial affairs in order and speak to their accountants and that kind of thing, and they told us they plan to save their winnings for retirement.”
He adds that, after withholding, they still received more than $200,000. “This particular prize is subject to both a 24% withholding for federal taxes and then a 5% withholding for state taxes. So, their take home was $213,000.”
