(Milford)– A special honor for Okoboji High School Principal Brian Downing. He’s been named Iowa Secondary Principal of the Year. Downing tells KUOO news he’s very flattered with the recognition…
“Well it’s put forth by the School Administrators of Iowa and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. I was actually notified last fall that someone had nominated me. I don’t know who did that, but thank you to whoever that was. And then there’s a process where you had to submit some writing, had to submit my resume, and then was chosen to be in an interview process earlier this week for the final three finalists and spend about an hour on an interview with a committee made up of principals from around the state and then was notified that I was chosen as Principal Of The Year.”
He also thanks everyone who made it possible for him to receive the honor…
“I’m blessed to work with the best administrative team there is. We’ve worked together for a long time. I very much believe that every single member of our team would be worthy of recognition such as this. And so it’s an honor to represent them and the hard work that they do, and our district. You know I’ve spent the last 11 years here. My kids are all in the district and we’re so thankful for everything the school district has given us, and it’s great to help represent them in this capacity.”
Downing says he will be attending the School Administrator of Iowa annual conference in August…
“There’s a next step of this. There’s a Middle School Principal Of The Year and a High School Principal Of The Year and one of those two will have another interview round and one will be chosen to represent the state of Iowa on to the national conference and actually be involved in the national Secondary Principal Of The Year Award running. So we’ll find out more about that in the weeks to come.”
Downing has been Principal at Okoboji High School since 2010. Prior to that he was secondary principal at Lisbon Community School District.
