Cardinal Field In Spencer To Get A Facelift

March 18, 2021

(Spencer)– A baseball field in Spencer that hasn’t been played on for quite some time is getting some new life. The city council this week signed off on some improvements being planned for Cardinal Field. Jared Elbert of the city’s Parks and Recreation Department told the council some tournaments are planned for the field this coming summer. He outlined the scope of the project…Jared Elbert & Cardinal Field

“We’re looking at renovating the infield to bring it up to a quality playing surface. The little league, youth baseball and softball association has expressed interest in using that field, especially during Slugfest to add another additional 10 teams to their tournament, and so we’re going to try to renovate that field to increase that playing surface to bring it up to a better quality and then add three different base paths to accommodate different governing bodies so they’re going to do some infield work, redo the pitching mound, batters boxes, re-skin the infield and then later level the infield.”

The project is being funded through the city of Spencer’s Capital Improvement program as well as through a grant from the Clay County Community Foundation.
