(Okoboji)– We’re mourning the passing of actress Dawn Wells, who is probably best known for the beloved character Mary Ann on the 1960’s sitcom Gilligan’s Island. But Dawn also holds a very special place in the heart of many locally. She made several appearances over the years at Okoboji Summer Theatre, which is owned and operated by Stephens College of Columbia, Missouri, of which Wells is an alum.
RuthAnne Burke, Executive Director of Okoboji Summer Theatre, says Wells made an appearance here as recent as 2011 in the production “Steel Magnolias”…
“She was very appreciative to have the chance to come back to the Okoboji Summer Theatre. My favorite part of the whole week with her was that after working day and night to help get that show up, she was able to join us for a public appearance. She agreed to do a public appearance after the show. It started at 10:30 at night at the Art Center and people lined out the door to meet her, and she gave away head shots and then did a discussion about her career. We were there until after midnight and it was surprising how many in the community came out and wanted to have their memorabilia signed and talking about her life.”
Burke says Wells also played a major role in helping aspiring actors and actresses…
“She had hired several students as a personal assistant over recent years and they were reflecting on their time with her. And I just thought back to the California life that she gave some of our students, a chance to start their careers in Los Angeles and gave them the best advice that she had about having a solid career in the performing arts. And just looking back at what a gracious lady she was and a good friend to all of us.”
Dawn Wells passed away earlier this week of complications from COVID-19.
