Dreaming Of A White Christmas? Dream No More! A Winter Storm Watch Is In Effect For Portions Of The Region

December 22, 2020

(Spirit Lake)– Some big changes are in store for us when it comes to the weather over the next 24 to 36 hours.

The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for portions of the region Wednesday morning through Wednesday evening. It includes Lyon, Osceola, O’Brien and Sioux counties in northwest Iowa and Cottonwood, Jackson, Murray and Nobles counties within the southwest Minnesota portion of our listening area. It’s for the possibility of blizzard-like conditions.

Forecasters say two to four inches of snow can be expected in those areas. Amounts will be slightly less in the Iowa Great Lakes. They say the falling snow, combined with a north wind gusting as high as 40 mph at times, will likely lead to whiteout conditions and extremely hazardous travel through the day Wednesday.

Anyone who must travel Wednesday, especially in those areas under the winter storm watch, should have a winter survival kit in their vehicle and stay tuned for later forecasts.
