BVU Approved By IDPH For Pfizer Vaccine Storage

December 21, 2020

(Storm Lake)– Buena Vista University in Storm Lake is offering the use of an ultra cold freezer in their Science Center to store the Pfizer vaccine, expected to arrive their in mid to late January. It will be one of just a few sites that will be able to store the Pfizer vaccine outside of Iowa’s metro areas.

BVU President Brian Lenzmeier says the freezer is capable of reaching minus 122 degrees Fahrenheit. He says the university acquired the freezer in 2011. It was upgraded in 2016 and is used by faculty members and students for research projects involving biological tissues and cell lines that need to be stored in extreme cold.

Lenzemeier adds BVU has been approved by the Iowa Department of Public Health as a storage site for the Pfizer vaccine.

Buena Vista county will also be receiving 500 doses of the Moderna vaccine, along with most other counties in the region, this week. Health workers and nursing home residents will be among the first to receive it.
