(Spirit Lake)-The annual Rotary Car Drop Contest is getting underway, KUOO’s Becky Thoreson has details:
Tickets are now on sale for the Iowa Great Lakes Rotary annual Car Drop Contest.
Club Secretary Leo Kofoot explains how it works. “When the ice gets solid enough to hold a car, we have Kirshbaum’s Tow & Repair pull a car out there that has been prepared to go on the ice with reflectors on and so forth. We sell tickets on what time it’s going to go through the ice. It doesn’t matter what day it is, it’s just the time, and the purchaser of a ticket gets both a.m. and p.m. There’s a clock installed in the car, and when we recover the car after it’s gone through the ice, the clock is pulled out and the time has been recorded as to when the clock hit the water and the winner is then determined by who has that particular time or closest to it. It’s a $1,000 cash prize and tickets are $10 each.”
He adds that proceeds from the fundraiser help the Club’s community projects. “Some of the proceeds we’ve used for the Shelby Duis Playground, we use it for youth activities that we help support, we put up an outdoor pavilion up at Camp Foster.”
He notes that tickets are available at several locations. “We’ve got 4 locations, The Hutt, The Dry Dock, The Ritz and McKeens. All of the members have tickets for sale and you can purchase them online.”
