4th Dis. Congressional Candidate J D Scholten Says It’s Time To Change The Process For Supreme Court Nominations

September 29, 2020

(Spirit Lake)– A Democrat seeking Iowa’s 4th District Congressional seat is sounding off on President Trump’s nomination to fill the vacancy left on the Supreme Court by the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg. J.D. Scholten told KUOO news in an interview today (Tues.) he wants the process de-politicized…Scholten04

“However we can do that I’d be interested in going down that route. You know I think there’s an option right now to either turn up the heat on this and make it more polarizing or cool things down. I would just like to see it cooled down. You know what they could have done was bring a bi-partisan group of about eight senators to create a list of folks who would be eligible and pick somebody from there, but it seems like it’s being jammed down our throats right now.”

Scholten says it’s likely the process is being sped up by the quickly approaching election November 3rd and that it’s part of an effort to get at least a portion of the affordable care act declared unconstitutional…Scholten05

“The reality is it’s not a good time during a global pandemic to put millions of Americans off health insurance. That’s the number one thing we hear about going to every single town on our 374 town tour right now that we’re 80 percent in is healthcare is the number one issue. Accessibility is shrinking and costs are skyrocketing in this area and we need to fix both those.”

And when it comes to the pandemic and how it’s being handled, Scholten had this to say…Scholten06

“The experts have always said we’re eight weeks away at all times from getting over this and this one foot in one foot out approach has not been working and we continue on this path. One of the things that I like to draw attention to is that President Trump’s CDC guidelines are actually what we should be following but nobody seems to be talking about them. I don’t know if Democrats aren’t talking about them because it’s on the other side of the aisle or I don’t know why President Trump isn’t talking about them more, but those guidelines are what we should be following and they’re not be followed in Des Moines and, or even pushed and so that’s what I would like to see.”

Scholten has been holding a series of parking lot rallies in recent days in the area. He’ll be holding one this (Tues.) evening at 7:00 pm at the parking lot of the Dickinson County Expo Building in Spirit Lake.
