Iowa Legislative Council Approves Changes

September 26, 2020

(Des Moines, IA) — About 600-thousand Iowans have already requested an absentee ballot to vote early in this year’s general election and the Legislative Council voted today (Friday) to let county election officials start opening the outer envelopes carrying those ballots on October 31st. The actual ballots will stay inside the secrecy envelopes and will not be counted until Election Day.

Legislators also will allow the use of a driver’s license or photo I-D that expired this year to fulfill the voter I-D requirement for voting. D-O-T offices were closed due to the pandemic and have just recently started accepting appointments for re-issuing I-Ds and licenses.
