Iowa Lakeside Laboratory announces Scientist in Residence Dr. Rebecca Kauten began duties August 1

Iowa Lakeside Laboratory has announced that Dr. Rebecca Kauten began her duties as the 2020 Scientist in Residence Fellow on August 1.

Executive Director Dr. Mary Skopec explains.  “Dr. Kauten’s research is about how humans and the environment interact.  Specifically, we’re interested in policy questions and the decisions that are made about resource management.  Really what we need to know in the Iowa Great Lakes is how people feel about recreation.  What are the kinds of things that they’re looking for, what sort of alternatives are there in recreation, and just to basically understand the baseline conditions.  What kind of boats do we have here, the types of recreation that’s happening.  We really need to develop that baseline of information so that decision makers can really look at that and make the best decisions for everyone involved.”

She notes that Lakes area residents may be asked to take a survey in the near future.  “We will be sending a survey to the residents of Dickinson County.  That survey will be coming out hopefully in the next month or so, and it’s going to ask people about how they feel about recreation, what do they do, what would they like to be doing that they aren’t currently doing, so that we understand what the opportunities are for improved recreation in this area.”
