(Arnolds Park)– A law requiring dogs be on a 10 foot leash will be going on the books in Arnolds Park. The city council Wednesday voted four-to-one to approve the first reading and to waive the second and third readings and adopted the ordinance. The action followed a public hearing that drew comments both for and against the measure.
Councilman Jason Christianson cast the lone dissenting vote, saying he felt an animal at-large ordinance already on the books would adequately address the matter…
“The law is already there. The same thing happens whether we have this law or what we have currently.”
Councilman John Adams Senior disagreed, saying he wants something more definitive…
“After raising pups and dogs and having been around it 40 years, I don’t feel I’ve ever seen a dog that is a perfect dog and would not do anything given the situation that may come up. And if you would be one of the five or 10 percent that would be, I commend you for that. But I think here my point of view is that we’re governing for the common good of the whole city and I just see a percentage that are to me, 80 to 90 percent, that are people that should have their dogs leashed.”
In other business, the Arnolds Park City Council voted to approve an amended ordinance banning parking on Helms Drive; they approved a request from Historic Arnolds Park, Incorporated to install a statue honoring Berkley Bedell on some city-owned land near the state pier; and they voted to increase fees charged to pick up brown/white bulk items from $15 currently to $20.
